GrantsCardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Human Performance Endowment FundPurpose:We are pleased to announce the creation of the “Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Human Performance Endowment Fund” with the Foundation for Physical Therapy. This endowment wil provide funding for scholarships and research grants to investigate physical therapy management of patients with, or at risk for, cardiovascular and pulmonary disorders, as well as to investigate physical therapy’s role in prevention, fitness and health promotion. The first scholarship to be funded will be the Scot C Irwin, PT, DPT, CCS, Doctoral Scholarship, and may be awarded as either a PODS I or PODS II level DOCS scholarship. Dr.Irwin was a founding member of the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section – APTA, Inc. and its first president as well as one of the first board certified specialists in this practice area. He died unexpectedly in August 2005. You may identify the donation as “In Memory of Scot Irwin, P.T., D.P.T., C.C.S.” or specify the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section Human Performance Endowment Fund. Donate to the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research Section Research GrantPurpose:Originally created in 1995, the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section - APTA, Inc. Research Grant is designed to stimulate well-defined research studies that are related to cardiovascular and pulmonary physical therapy. The grant is supported through Section fund raising activities as well as through donations by individuals or Section business partners. Minimum Guaranteed Funding:Grant will be $5,000 every year. Eligibility:There are two eligibility requirements for the Section research grant:
Guidelines:Student Grants are focused on Doctor of Physical Therapy students completing their capstone or terminal research experience. PhD, EdD, and DSc students can also apply to student grants; however, it is encouraged to apply for the Regular Grants category. Resource Grants are focused on graduate physical therapists who need some minor research-related support (e.g. minor piece of equipment, statistical support, etc.) to move their research agenda. Regular Grants are focused on licensed physical therapist who would like to advance their research career. This includes physical therapists working on their thesis or dissertation for their PhD, EdD, or DSc. Students submitting as primary investigators, either in the Student or Regular Grants, must submit an NIH-biosketch of mentor(s) that will be assisting the student on the project. This grant does not allow the inclusion of any indirect cost. Recipient Responsibilities:Grant recipients are required to complete the following items:
Failure to fulfill these requirements will cause the applicant to be ineligible for future funding from the Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Section. Selection Committee:Members of the Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section Research Committee will review applications and select a grant recipient based on the criteria outlined below. Selection Criteria:Evaluators rate each proposal on the following criteria:
The score given to a proposal is an average of the ratings from all evaluators. The Research Chair and or a designee from the committee will serve as a second juror if there is any questions regarding the scoring of the grant, as in the case of a tie or in any other circumstances that the Chair deems necessary to correctly award the grant. During this process, the Chair would notify and obtain approval from the Section President and or Executive Board. Timeline:A call for proposals will be issued via email and posted on the Section website in August every year a grant is offered. The submission deadline is October 15 no later than 11:59 pm EST. Late submissions will be returned to the applicant without review. The recipient will be notified by the Chair of the Research Committee no later than December 1. IRB approval must be obtained by January 1 in order to receive the grant. This is very important in order to complete the work within 12 months.
